Bamboo, like cork flooring, is durable, looks great, and is a renewable resource. New bamboo grows from the same plant after it has been harvested, so no replanting is needed.
There are several styles of bamboo used for floors.
Bamboo floor coverings come in a variety of styles and textures:
Strand bamboo is made up of shredded bamboo fibers which are compressed under extreme heat and pressure, yielding bamboo flooring that is harder and more dense than traditional bamboo flooring. This creates the striking “grain” for which stranded bamboo flooring is famous. Though it isn’t as green/eco-friendly as other bamboo flooring types, strand bamboo is the type we most highly recommend for homes due to its versatility for multiple settings, its ability to withstand fluctuating humidity levels, and its strength. Strand bamboo is typically twice as strong as oak.
While the following are alternative bamboo flooring options, we don’t typically recommend them as they lack strand bamboo’s durability and longevity.
Carbonized bamboo has been steamed, caramelizing the sugar within the bamboo to give it a rich, dark color without staining.
Hand-scraped stained bamboo gives bamboo a contoured, hand-scraped finish. The grooved look of the flooring is a wonderful choice for those who love a rustic and unique style.
Natural bamboo is just that, bamboo in its natural, not-carbonized, not-stained state.
Strand is just that, bamboo in its natural, not-carbonized, not-stained state.
Bamboo flooring has the compression strength to withstand heavy traffic areas, as well as the wear and tear that children and pets can put on a floor. Notably, strand bamboo is especially strong, ensuring it lasts longer than normal bamboo. While bamboo in general is exceptionally durable, it will not be as hard on your legs and feet as standing on a concrete floor or hardwood flooring.
Because bamboo grows in such tropical high heats and is a renewable resource, it is able to withstand extremely hot temperatures. It’s dimensionally stable; therefore, it does not swell or contract like hardwood making it a great choice for rooms that continually have hotter temperatures and moisture like kitchens and laundry rooms. It’s also a great choice for humid climates.
When you decide to go with bamboo flooring, you have made an environmentally protective choice. It’s one of the most eco-friendly flooring options available and is a great choice for those who practice being green.
Even strand bamboo, when sourced responsibly, is considered a greener material than natural hardwood despite using more bamboo branches than other bamboo flooring types.
Bamboo is cut above the roots; therefore, it neither harms the plant nor requires replanting. After being harvested, the plant regrows quickly and is regenerated!
Because it’s a product of nature, bamboo floorings are unique in style and are an elegant choice for most rooms in your home. It can easily warm up a room and make your home one that is admired by visitors.
